2024 DCYRA President's Message
After a long winter with little to no sailing, I’m sure many of you are like me and can’t wait to get back on the water. The DCYRA Board has put together another great season of sailing and look forward to your participation. We’ll kick off the season with the traditional Steiding Cup Race on May 25 at noon, and the regatta for the remainder of the Memorial Day weekend will be the Commodores Cup. At the request of past and current Commodores of both clubs to reduce the number of commitments on Labor Day weekend, the DCYRA Executive Committee decided to swap the dates for the Commodores Cup and the Becker Cup Regattas. Same great regattas, just swapped weekends.
There will be a Competitor’s Meeting on Saturday, May 25 at 10 am. This will be an opportunity for our race officials to brief the racing community on the Sailing Instructions and other matters as necessary. This is not a mandatory meeting but is encouraged.
The remainder of our sailing calendar looks exciting with 27 series races schedule, seven regattas including two invitational regattas and two “old school” races (Magellan and Steiding Cup). We look forward to seeing new sailors on the course. If you know someone who is thinking about racing, why not volunteer to race with them a few times to help them get comfortable with the program. Remind them that there are multiple fleets for Flying Scots and Lasers to meet everyone’s needs.
This year the Women’s Regatta will be a two-day regatta and while the skipper must be a woman, men may be crew in both Championship and Challenger Fleets. This is done to encourage more sailors to participate.
Check the PRO and Patrol schedule for your assigned dates. Please take your responsibility for these tasks seriously. If you cannot fulfill your obligation on the assigned weekend, find a replacement and let the Race Commander or Patrol Chair know who that is. If we don’t have race officials or patrol, no one cannot race.
Finally, I would like to offer a huge thank you to all of the volunteers who work to make our racing program successful. Our racing program is one of the most active ones amongst Flying Scot fleets and we should be proud of that. However, it doesn’t happen without a lot of hard work. Thank you to our race committees, patrol crews, regatta committees, board of directors and contributing members.
Happy sailing,
Greg Shafer
DCYRA President
